Venkateshwara The Protector In Kaliyug

 Venkateshwara The Protector In Kaliyug

  Temple Information

Venkateswara Temple is a landmark Vaishnavite temple situated in the hill town of Tirumala at Tirupati in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Sri Venkateswara, an incarnation of Vishnu, who is believed to have appeared here to save mankind from trials and troubles of Kali Yuga.

Address: S Mada St, Tirumala, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh 517504

Opened: 300 AD

Phone: 0877 227 7777

Architectural style: Dravidian architecture

District: Chittoor

Lord Venkateswara is another incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is said that Lord Venkateswara has made his abode at seven hills to protect the mankind from the miseries of the Kalyug. As per the Hindu mythology, the creator dissolves his creation at the end of his night. The entire time span for which the creation exists is divided into four periods Satya, Treta, Dwapar and Kalyug. Of the four periods, Kalyug is the worst when all evil forces take controls. Luckily the total of the four periods spans 43.4 billion years. The Shesnag is the thorn and the his hood is the umbrella over Lord Venkateswara. At the far end of the Dwapar era, the Rishis were performing Yajna, but who will receive the fruits remain undecided. So, Bhrigu set out to find the best among the Trinities of Hindu gods. Bhrigu has one advantage; he had a third eye on his foot. Bhrigu visited the abodes of the Brahma and the Shiva and found them wanting. He then visited the Vishnu and found him in meditation and totally ignoring the sage. Enraged sage kicked Vishnu in the chest, Vishnu woke up and apologized to Bhrigu for hurting his foot and massaged his foot to squash the extra eye out. Laksmi took it as an insult and left Baikuntham and start meditating at Kolhapur. Vishnu set out to search Laksmi disguises as Srinivasa and reached the seven hills and start meditating. A cow and a calf given by Laksmi used to provide food and nourishment to Srinivasa. A Cowherd sees this stuck the cow with his baton, but the blow struck Srinivasa instead enraged Lord cursed the king for the cruel act of his subject. The king pleads mercy and Srinivasa said to condone his sin he will take his next birth as Akasaraja and must arrange the marriage of her daughter with Srinivasa. Accordingly Srinivasa married Padamavati daughter of Akasaraja and returned to Tirumala hills. Lakshmi hearing the news reached Tirumala to get an explanation from Srinivasa. Srinivasa seeing Laksmi and Padamavati turned himself to a stone statue. Lord Brahma and Shiva explained that it is lord’s desire to stand by his devotees and disciples to protect them throughout the Kalyug. Srinivasa is Lord Venkateswara, and Laksmi stays on the left and Padamavati at the right of his heart..

Beliefs for worship

Lord Venkateswara is the savior of mankind in the troubled era of Kalyug. If prayed with full devotion the Lord Venkateswara grants all legitimate demands of his disciples.

How to worship Lord Venkateswara

The legend says the Lord Venkateswara taken a loan from 11.4 million gold coins from Kuber to meet the marriage expenses. As per contract witnessed by Brahma and Shiva, the Lord Venkateswara will liquidate the loan before the end of the era. The ornaments donated by the devotees in the hundreds go to repay the debt. This is a kind of worship. But, if you want to worship Lord Venkateswara at home, you must do it after taking a bath with clean and pure heart. You need sincere devotion, and that is all the Lord demands. It is just like your normal puja with incense stick, diya, Tulsi and sandal paste.

Festivals based on Venkateswara

The main festival is Venkateswara Brahmotsavam; it is a nine-day long festival celebrated in the month of October. Other major festivals are Vaikuntha Ekadasi, Rathasaptami, Ramnavami, Janmashtami and Ugadi.

The Dress Code at Tirupati

The Tirupati temple is one of the most sacred Hindu sites in the world, and it is imperative that you respect the religious sentiments of the devotees while you are there. A dress code is strictly enforced by the temple management, and it is important that you abide by the rules of the Devasthanam. Light colours are preferred to dark, bright ones. Men are advised to wear dhotis or veshtis that are south Indian staples. You can also opt for kurta-pyjamas or long tunics. Avoid wearing shorts or capris. Jeans are also discouraged. Loose-fitting trousers and pants are allowed. Shirts and tees are also allowed but do not opt for gaudy prints. Men are not required to be shirtless within temple premises.

Women are advised to wear saris or long tunics. Kurtis is allowed as well. Chudidars, suits and shawls are also allowed. Women can opt for ankle-length skirts and blouses, or half-saris too. Sleeveless tops and knee-baring dresses are not allowed within the temple.

Do's and Don’ts at Tirumala Tirupati Temple

  • For the best views of the deity on the tank, be sure to take a spot on the steps of the holy tank beforehand, as the region gets very crowded as time passes. If you want to accompany the procession as it makes its way around the mada streets, you may not get a good view of the final ceremony. It is advisable to plan your trip around the five days in such a way that you can witness both the procession and the concluding prayers. It is recommended that you get a good spot at the tank steps especially on the last day – Pournami – as the ritual is a must-watch!

  • Make sure to follow the dress code, as violations are viewed seriously. The weather is warm, so dress accordingly.

  • Most of the events are held at the sacred premises, which means that you will have to be barefoot. Avoid littering, and watch where you step.

  • Dispose of waste responsibly, especially prasadam leftovers and other offerings.

  • Take care of your valuables, especially wallets, mobile phones and jewellery. It is advised to not wear flashy jewellery or carry large amounts of cash while on the trip.

  • Take care of your children and keep sight of them at all times, as the crowds are quite overwhelming. It is better to give your children an identity tag with your contact information on it, in case of emergencies.

  • Carry an empty utensil to take the offerings home, as temple packaging may leak or tear. Avoid wasting food and prasadam.

  • Remember to book accommodation at Tirumala well in advance, as pilgrim influx is maximum during Teppotsavam season.

  • Smoking, drinking alcohol and consuming non-vegetarian food are prohibited inside temple premises. Respect the religious sentiments of the pilgrims during your visit.

  • All bookings done online are to be done through the official website of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam website.

  • Be wary of fake sites and quacks who may cheat you.

  • Electronic devices are allowed only minimally inside the temple. Use your phone minimally, and enjoy the wholesome spiritual experience at Tirumala.

Things to Keep in Mind

This is one of the most crowded times of the year at Tirupati, drawing in millions of devotees to the region. If you are looking to attend the regular prayers and rituals, keep in mind that some of them may be cancelled on account of the Teppotsavam. In particular, the Sahasra Deepalankara Seva is cancelled on all five days while the Arjitha Brahmotsavam and Vasanthotsavam pujas are not held on the last three days of the Teppotsavam. The Pournami Garuda Vahana Seva to be held on the day of the full moon is also cancelled. Morning prayers are held as scheduled, and there are not many changes to note.

The festival is celebrated with great vigour and attracts a large number of devotees every year. On the first day, 'Anurarpana' ritual is performed along with the ceremony of paying respect to Shri Vishvaksena. The Anurarpuna ritual signifies ripeness, richness, success and abundance.

A procession dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara is also seen on Pedda Seshavahana and covers four streets of the temple for over two hours till midnight.

During the nine days of the festival, religious activities like homas and processions (vahanam) of various idols are taken out on chariots, both in the morning and evening at the temple.

The 9 Days Of Brahmotsavam

  • Dwajarohanam

Dwajarohanam meaning flag hoisting is held on the first day. A flag bearing the image of Garuda (Mount of Vishnu) on the top of Dwajasthabam of the temple is hoisted amidst the chanting of the Vedas. This symbolises the formal invitation which is given to the deities to attend the Brahmotsavam Festival. Before the flag hoisting ceremony, there is a procession of the deities. As a tradition, after the dwajarohanam, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh offers new silk clothes to the Lord.

  • Pedda Sesha Vahanam

After Dwajarohanam, in the evening, there is a procession of Lord Venkateshwara on Adi Sesha, the thousand-headed chief serpent which is known as Pedda Sesha Vahanam

  • Chinna Shesha Vahanam

Vahanam (procession) during Brahmotsavam

This is held on the second day when the Lord is taken out on Vaasuki (Serpent God). Chinna Sesha Vahanam is five-headed.

  • Hamsa Vahanam

The Lord is again taken out in a procession in the evening on the second day on Hamsa (swan). Hamsa signifies purity and high intellectual capability.

  • Simha Vahanam

The Lord is taken out in a procession on a lion on the third day. This is held in the morning and symbolises power. It is believed that Lord Venkateshwara assumed the form of a half lion and half man in his Narasimha Avatara.

  • Muthyala Pallaki Vahanam

Held in the evening on the third day, the Lord is taken out in a procession with Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi, his consorts. They are taken in a palanquin decorated with an umbrella of pearls.

  • Kalpa Vruksha Vahanam

The Lord is again taken in a procession on Kalpa Vruksha as his vehicle. This signifies that he is the giver of boons and fulfils all the wishes of his devotees.

  • Sarva Bhoopala Vahanam

On the fourth day (evening), the Lord goes out in a procession on a vehicle called Sarva Bhoopala. This signifies that he is the Lord of Lords.

  • Mohini Avatharam

Decorated in the attire of Mohini Avatharam, one who distributed the Divine Nectar, Lord Venkateshwara again goes out in a procession. This procession is held on the fifth day and starts from the temple in data pallaki accompanied by Lord Krishna in the other pallaki (palanquin).

  • Garuda Vahanam

In the evening on the fifth day, the Lord goes out in a finely decorated procession with his chief devotee and vehicle, Garuda (the King of Birds). Thousands gather to witness this grand spectacle. It is considered extremely auspicious to witness this sight.

  • Hanumantha Vahanam

Lord Hanuman is Lord Venkateshwara’s vehicle for the procession on the sixth day. Lord Hanuman is believed to be the most trusted devotee of the Lord.

  • Swarna Rathotsavam

In the evening on the sixth day, Lord Venkateshwara is taken out first for Swarnarathotsavam and then on an elephant as his vehicle.

  • Surya Prabha Vahanam

On the seventh day, the Lord is taken out on a procession with the Sun God as his chariot. Sun is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Maha Vishnu.

  • Chandra Prabha Vahanam

In the evening, the Lord again goes out in a procession with Moon as his vehicle.

Both these rituals on the seventh day signify that Lord Venkateshwara is the cause of days and nights.

  • Rathostavam

On the second last day, the Lord goes out in a procession along with his consorts on a beautiful Chariot pulled by his devotees. There is chanting of Govinda Nama Smarana. There is a belief that those who witness this are liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

  • Ashwa Vahanam

With Ashwa (horse) as his chariot, the Lord goes out in a procession. This is a symbol of the forthcoming Kali Avatar. Lord Venkateshwara used to ride a horse while hunting wild animals.

  • Chakra Snanam

On the last day of Brahmotsavam, a special tradition is observed called Avabhrutha Snanam. It is held for Malayappa and his consorts along with Sudarshan Chakra. Later, the Sudarshan Chakra is immersed in Swamy Pushkarini.

  • Dwajaavarohanam

On a ninth day, the Garuda flag is lowered as a mark of completion of the festival. The priests chant various mantras and rituals are performed in Dwajastamba and mandapa.

Legends & Myth of Brahmotsavam

The festival is a thanksgiving to Lord Brahma. According to legends, it is believed that Lord Brahma first worshipped Lord Balaji at the catchment area of the holy Pushkarini river to thank the Lord for his blessings to humankind. Hence, the festival is named after him as he was the first one to conduct it at the Tirupati Temple.

Relevance Of The Festival

The importance of the festival is reflected in the fact that thousands of devotees come to Andhra Pradesh for this festival and take part in the various festivities and rituals which take place on the nine days of the festival to seek the blessing of the Lord. They often describe it as heavenly and blissful (Vaikunth Anubhav).

An Amazing Miracle Of Lord Venkateswara Of Tirumala Tirupati

An Amazing Miracle Of Lord Venkateswara Of Tirumala Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India.

An Amazing Miracle Of Lord Venkateswara Of Tirumala Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India.

This truly amazing and the most unbelievable miracle occurred almost three and half decades ago at the holy abode of Lord Sri Venkateswara of the Tirumala Tirupati temple, that’s located on a hilltop,in the Southern part of India…

This great miracle still surprises many and is still a mystery to many so called atheists of our modern world.. This miracle not only endorses the divine existence of God but it also very emphatically approves our faith in Him…

But Where Is Tirumala Temple And Who Is Lord Sri Venkateswara ??

Located on a hilltop,853 meters above the main sea level,Tirumala (Tiru means holy and Mala means hill) is a major pilgrimage center near the Tirupati town in the Chittor district of Andhra Pradesh,India...Spread over an area of 10.33 square miles, the Tirumala hill shrine consists of seven hills namely Seshadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri, Vrishabhadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri…

The main temple of Tirumala Tirupati lies on the seventh hill called Venkatadri, which is why this holy Tirumala Temple is also called “The Temple Of Seven Hills”…Lord Sri Venkateswara, also known as Balaji and Govinda,is the presiding deity of this holy temple…

Today,if we go by the available statistics, about thirty to forty million pilgrims, from all over the world, visit this holy temple every year making Lord Sri Venkateswara the most worshiped Hindu God in the world and Tirumala the most visited place of worship…

With its annual revenue running into billions of Indian rupees,Tirumala is also the richest pilgrimage center of faith in the modern world..

The Amazing Miracle

This truly amazing miracle occurred,in the holy temple of Tirumala,on the mid night of 7th November,1979…

At that time, right from a street urchin to the holy Lord, the whole of Tirumala was in a very deep sleep…All the otherwise busy streets of the holy temple town were wearing a vacant look..

Except an occasional sound here and there, the whole of the Tirumala hill shrine was filled with absolute silence..

And exactly during that dark hour…

Breaking all the silence…

This miracle occurred and occurred quite suddenly taking the entire hill shrine of Tirumala by surprise.
